JONATHAN (JON) MURPHY, QPM

Jon Murphy is the present Chief Constable of Merseyside Police. He joined Merseyside Police as Cadet 103 in January 1975 and became Constable 5248A on 27/12/1976 and was posted to Liverpool City Centre.

During the ‘Toxteth Riots‘ of July 1981 he was a front line officer confronting the rioters and held the rank of Acting Sergeant.

Soon after the riots he was promoted to Sergeant and then gradually progressed through the ranks to Chief Superintendent serving in both the C.I.D. and uniform departments. In 2001 he was promoted to Assistant Chief Constable and left Merseyside to become Head of Operations at the National Crime Squad now known as the Serious Organised Crime Agency. He returned to Merseyside Police as Deputy Chief Constable in 2004 and was awarded the Queens Police Medal in 2007.

He was promoted to Chief Constable, Merseyside Police in February 2010.

He studied for a BA (Hons) in Law at Liverpool University in 2001 and gained a diploma in Applied Criminology from Cambridge University.

He retired in June 2016. He was also given the title of Professor of Law by Liverpool John Moores University
